hello you! welcome to my wee blog!

orange you glad you read this?

with 13 comments

Oh gosh, I haven’t blogged for almost a week!

But really, nothing much happened because work was so busy and it’s 2nd week of training so I was running 4 times last week! Eek!

Also, an incident this week got me thinking about my career.

I’m one of those people who’s doing something totally unrelated to what I studied in school, and believe me, I’m loving it.

But of course you get the heat from people who can’t seem to understand why.

Do any of you get this too? It can be mighty frustrating.

The only thing to do is to know that you love what you do, batten down the hatches, work harder, think about your career progression and the hardest bit – make the people who don’t understand, understand.

Either that or ignore.

And now I am eating an orange for breakfast (ie. life goes on.) and enjoying the morning.

Also, here’s a question: How do you travel AND save money?

  1. Oooooh, good question – something I’ve been wondering of late too, especially since I have friends who travel every 2-3 months, pay for their partners’ holidays and still lead relatively comfortable lifestyles.

I can’t wait to read the responses.

  2. I’m glad to hear you’re loving what you do! And let those conformists be puzzled – you don’t have to win them over, and I think you can’t… They’ll never understand. It’s like comparing apples to oranges.

As for traveling and saving… it’s tough! I suppose, traveling within Asia and making very smart choices about accommodation & airtix?

  3. hello nab nab! i felt compelled to respond to the last question since i get asked that a lot. haha!

well the most basic requirement is scouring online to get the best deals on flights/ accom as already mentioned by your friend. that way all of my travels are always value- for- money.

the honest truth is i am hardly out on weekdays. if i am, i rarely eat at expensive places. in fact while i indulge in good food, i don’t believe in spending so much on that good food. so that’s a start.

by not going out i already save a lot of $- transport, ‘accidental’ shopping, eating out etc. thus when i do go out, i can spend a bit more/ splurge, hence giving people the impression of comfy lives.

i shop sporadically, but my things are always on the cheap end. and i can go for weeks without buying anything for myself (other than needs like toiletries of course). this has surprisingly allowed me to save quite a bit each month, cuz i used to “SHOPPING SPREE!!!!” every pay- day which is quite bodoh hahaha.

lastly i hate cabs. i walk a lot, and have quite an infinite patience for public transport despite its failings. again, major cost- saver.

so i guess it’s really about balance. i’ve never really had to tighten my belt or scrimp and save for my trips. but i do teach tuitions on sundays despite a full- time job and perhaps that gives me that extra allowance as well. priorities, i guess. if i want my super slack weekend, i won’t be able to afford as much traveling as i like. similarly, i cannot just buy that $250 furla glasses NOWNOWNOW or even that $89.90 zara top… yet. haha.

super long and wordy but hope it helps toward more travels for you! (:

  4. Travel to places where you have friends or make new ones via the interweb so you can sleep on their couch!

  5. I haven’t even started working yet and I’m getting it left, right, centre. The whole thing abt people asking condescendingly:” Huh? You’re doing what now…? oh…I see.”

    (subtext: “Why’re you so stupid.”)

I still question sometimes whether the trade off is worth it. But most days, I’m happy to say I think it is so far, and I’d like to say that you seem happy with your job too! As opposed to if you went into one of the Big 4s.

And can we add a third option? Which is: SMACK THEM.

    No?

Daaamn. I didn’t think so too.

  6. Hi girls! *waves frantically* Thanks so much for your comments, I didn’t think I’d get any so I am happily surprised! 🙂

@Iconoclastic: Yes, I see this all the time too! You know they’re doing something right when they get to travel for a living! *envy*

    @theletterzee @fiza @greenlaundry:

Thanks for the tips loves! The saving bit is getting to me (ie. what fiza said, being frugal, not going out much, etc), cos sometimes I can’t help but buy that dress that I’ve been coveting (er, just happened last week).

I guess what Fiza says is right: Discipline, discipline, discipline? Btw, I might be going to Thailand in July, so yay to regional trips!

@greenlaundry: But couchsurfing scares the bejesus outta me! Have you done it before?

@sherms: I like your idea of smacking them. Very very much. And I don’t think you’re stupid my dear! You’re super talented, don’t let anyone tell you different yeah?

*I am le overwhelmed by your sincere comments*

    • to be honest, couchsurfing scares me too! haha. but it’s okay if it’s family or a real close friend, i guess. and i think fiza did a very thorough but true write-up… it’s about trade-offs and balance. So, you want to travel and to indulge in random covetous items! That’s fine. Just gotta cut back somewhere else 🙂 e.g. food, taxis. 🙂

  8. i’m like you! (doing something unrelated to my degree – and i love it!)

i don’t really care what people think because once i tell them i love what i do, they kinda shut up and have nothing else to say – i’d like to think its because they picked the “right” way and hate what they do.

the funny (or not so funny) part comes when you try to explain what PR is. people always give me the ?!!?!? look. SIGH.
