What is it about French films that enthralls one so?

I can hardly name one I watched that I did not love. Among my favourites: Love Me If You Dare, C.R.A.Z.Y, Amelie. Really,  I know everyone has watched Amelie but please if you love French films, do yourself a favour and watch C.R.A.Z.Y, it’s so good.

Recently, I caught Le petit Nicolas, or Little Nicholas in English, and again, it was just so good. It’s based on the storybook/illustrations of Le petit Nicolas by Jean-Jacques Sempé.

It’s one of those films that make you laugh with so little effort, nothing showy or too obvious. Plus, it portrayed a kind of simple love between family and friends that I really love in films, that implicit understanding that yes, we may not be perfect but this, this bond that holds us together, is something I would not trade for anything in this world, or the next. So simple yet so beautiful.

Plus, the little boys were so charming and their school uniforms were super cool! 😛

Highly recommended, do catch it while it is still playing at The Picturehouse!

  3. Oh crap, it’s no longer showing. Mel passed me her tickets (remember when before one of the floorball games, you and Shal were going “hey we like french movies too?”) to see this movie, which I did, AND LOVED IT, can’t believe a bunch of kiddos made me laugh from start to finish.

And I want Mel to see it. Ugh, well DVD please then.

  6. Yeah, it’s pretty nice but not as much as the original story. I’m French and Le Petit Nicolas is just a collection of stories that everyone knows about since childhood, which is probably why the movie was so much criticized (though it’s been quite welcomed at the same time).
Oh, and by the way the author of the books is in reality Gosninny (the same scenarist as for Asterix) while Sempe is the illustrator. And I really recommend the singer of the final song of the movie, he’s just awesome.
